On August 1, 1983, Laurel Greshel’s world changed forever after a phone call from her doctor. After receiving word that her unborn baby had serious health issues, Laurel was overwhelmed. As she and her husband, Ted, struggled to accept the diagnosis that their daughter, Amanda, would be born with spina bifida, they had to slowly learn to say goodbye to “normal” and embrace each of their tiny newborn’s accomplishments. Without any instruction book on how to raise a child with spina bifida, Laurel and Ted must learn to survive countless medical issues and several near-death scares with Amanda by leaning on their faith in God. As Laurel candidly shares experiences—both good and bad—that she has with doctors, nurses, teachers, family members, and friends, she offers a heartfelt glimpse into her painful struggles as she gives entirely of herself to help Amanda grow to her full potential. With the help of God’s steady hand, Laurel manages to raise two other daughters, nurture her marriage, and cope with all the ups and downs of caring for a medically challenged child. In this poignant memoir, one mother describes her unforgettable journey through her daughter’s difficulties, revealing the important message that God creates all of us just the way He wants us— perfectly made.   amazon

Laurel Rausch Greshel grew up in Parma, Ohio, and later moved to southeastern Michigan, where she and her husband, Ted, raised three daughters. It is through her faith that Laurel faced and survived the challenges of raising her eldest daughter, Amanda, who was born with spina bifida.

Just an Accident Book Blitz by Amy Montgomery - Win a $25 Amazon Gift Card!

Just an AccidentTitle: Just an Accident
Author: Amy Montgomery
Publisher: AuthorHouse
Pages: 229
Genre: Biography/Memoir
Format: Kindle

There was no blood at the scene, not even a cut on his body. Yet on May 25, 1999, when the top of a massive beech tree snapped off and slammed into 33-year-old, Adirondack logger Scott Remington, his bones exploded. The terrain was unforgiving and the area too remote for cell phones. So the fact that medics reached him is a miracle. So is the aftermath of a freak accident that felt like death to a woodsman who could never sit still. More than the story of one man, this is also about a small town that rescued Scott from despair, and, by accident, discovered the meaning of life. In this well written and extremely compelling book, Amy Montgomery draws us into the essence of living with a spinal cord injury through Scott Remington’s moving story. Her portrayal of his struggle to survive and live a meaningful life makes us care as much as the members of his family. In an instant both Scott and I became members of a club that neither of us would ever have wanted to join. But instead of self pity, Scott has demonstrated relentless energy, drive, and willpower that no disability can diminish. Montgomery has captured not only the drama of an accidental tragedy but the power of the human spirit to overcome it. Christopher Reeve Amy donates 10% of her $9.38 per-book royalties to the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I’ve been writing my whole life but never really took it seriously until about ten years ago. I’m not sure why I decided to try and write a full novel. I think I just wanted to see if I could do it :) It took awhile…I wrote half of it in about a month and then real life got in the way and it sat for about 2 years before I finally decided to finish it. I couldn’t let the story go…so one day I sat down and started writing again. A month later I had my first finished book :)

What books have influenced your life the most?

Victoria Holt was my first literary love. She wrote gothic romances that I just fell in love with. Sweeping moors and spooky castles filled with damsels in distress and dashing gentleman. I’ve been stuck on historical romances ever since.

What are your current projects?

I’m actually working on two contemporary romances, hopefully for Entangled’s new Lovestruck line, and a new non-fiction. But there will be more historicals soon. Can’t stay away from them too long :)

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I don’t think so. I really love Jessie and Tony and their story.

What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author?

I had some critique partners once really hate a book I was working on. Well, they didn’t hate it, but basically thought there was no plot (well, not one that was interesting anyway) and that the characters were flat. It was very hard to hear, but they were right. And because they were honest with me, I was able to go back and make the story much better.

What has been the best compliment?

I love to hear when someone has enjoyed one of my books. There’s really nothing better than someone saying they love your story. I’ve gotten some wonderful reviews over the years and it puts a perma-grin on my face for the rest of the day, every time :)

Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?

WRITE! No matter what else is going on in your life or publishing journey, find the time to write. Practice will never make perfect (because there is no such thing) but practice does make
publishable ;-)

What is your favorite quality about yourself?

I’m pretty optimistic. I have my bad days, but for the most part I’m good at finding the silver lining of just about anything.

What is your least favorite quality about yourself?

I really need to work on my patience LOL

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I love to hear from people, so come find me on Facebook or Twitter, review my books, or drop me an email :) I’m also starting up a Street Team that I’d love to have people join. My street team members get first dib on ARCs, exclusive sneak peeks and giveaways, and lots of other fun stuff – check it out if you’re interested. https://www.facebook.com/groups/640104312724870/

All that is human is mediated through language. And because we learned the process of being human in a culture as we learned the language of that culture, much that we learned remains invisible to us. But even though invisible, it guides what and how we learn and remember, our perceptions, our behaviors, including communicative behaviors. Throughout our lives, that early language/culture learning affects us, all too often without our realizing. The discoveries about that early learning that this book makes possible enable readers to see through their language and learn to live productively and engage fully in mutually fulfilling relationships. This book talks back to the old adage, Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt. We show how words do hurt, of course not by breaking bones, but by damaging self-confidence, reputations, livelihoods--or provoking people to the point of breaking bones--or worse. We focus on the roles of gender in language in effective or failed communication. We direct attention to invisible impacts of daily language use. When the invisible becomes visible, readers can see the many ways daily talk and interactions create and reinforce genders. We explore how language functions, its sources of power, and why it resists change even when negative impacts are clear. We explore how, in part through hidden gendering, English disadvantages many of its users and point to how the problems emerge in the ways gender functions in this supposedly non-gendered language. We describe how gendered language guides us to create and reinforce behaviors and relationships we do not intend. We conclude with suggestions of how to use English to reflect egalitarian values.
