Pages: 82
Genre: Fiction
Format: Ebook/Paperback

Storytellers have long filled our imaginations with stories about Santa, Santa’s elves, Mrs. Claus, and Santa’s Christmas Eve trip. In fairy-tale land, it is no mystery that he, along with Rudolph and the rest of the reindeer, must have the busiest Christmas Eve night ever. After all, they are famous for going from town to town leaving gifts for good little girls and good little boys. Santa is a right jolly old fellow! Sometimes we’re told that he gets a plate of cookies for sliding down chimneys, or going through the back door, or whatever his entrance may be. Yes, fairy tales do what fairy tales are supposed to do; they take us on imaginary journeys. However, in this fairy tale about Santa, he remembers that Christmas IS NOT really about him. Do you know the real Christmas story? Well, in case you don’t, and even if you do, come and follow Santa as he hears the real Christmas story, which is NOT a fairy tale. It is the story about the greatest gift in the whole wide world! Do you know who He is?

Genre: Medical/Nursing
Format: Paperback/Ebook

School nurses serve on the front lines of the everyday struggle for our children’s health, yet they are often perceived as little more than glorified dispensers of bandages. This false perception, held by many parents, officials, and administrators, does a serious disservice to this dedicated group of health professionals. Angels in Disguise tells the oral history of school nursing through the eyes, ears, and hearts of school nurses serving throughout the United States. By sharing their personal experiences, these nurses illustrate their love and compassion and throw the doors wide open on this often-undervalued profession, enabling readers to see into their world and understand how much they truly care for the children they treat. This collection of heartwarming stories offers unique insight into the daily responsibilities and duties of school nurses and serves to raise public awareness of the dedication, leadership, and exemplary pediatric health care provided by the devoted women and men who care for America’s schoolchildren. The sophisticated medical health care required in schools today can only be delivered by qualified professional school personnel, and that challenge is met by having a school nurse in every school facility.

I would like to continue writing and publishing more poetry and a novel. The Manager's Craft by Glenn Bassett

Title: The Manager's Craft
Author: Glenn Bassett
Publisher: Organization Diagnostics
Pages: 216
Genre: Business
Format: Paperback/Kindle

Almost any job or profession you can think of has a set of specific requirements for knowledge and skill that must be mastered. Managing and supervising the work of others is an exception. In part that is because the job of managing requires a range of social and technical skills that can vary widely depending on business circumstance. An infinite diversity of technologies, materials, markets and work skills can figure into the mix of the manager’s job. The manager may be asked to coordinate technically skilled team players, or, alternatively, may need to discipline the application of basic skills to achievement of production goals. Materials may be common or exotic. Customers may have influence over or little concern for product quality and design. Work skills may be common or rare. Technology may be critical or peripheral.

Some central managerial skills like accounting and finance can be trained. Mostly, they are dealt with as competences that are best left to specialists. Highly technical problems that demand specific training are, in general, treated as staff support jobs. The part of the job that always stays with the manager is that of working with and through other people to achieve cost-effective productivity using formal authority, personal influence, economic incentives and an understanding of organizing processes. As skill sets, these are very difficult to define. They blend and merge to become a personal suite of action strategies that are put to use as needed. Formal education and training can provide a summary focus, but only practice and experience can make them effective working tools. Much of managing and supervising is thus learned from experience on the job. The manager’s challenge is to find a mentor who can guide him/her past the most critical traps and blunders.

Much that passes for management training is, unfortunately, superficial or just wrong. Economic incentives are clearly basic but always insufficient. Application of authority is indispensable but can backfire or fail. Motivational programs can turn out to be all PR and noise. Workers may be satisfied and unproductive. Cost control measures can gut the core of product quality. Balancing it all can be a juggling act that daunts average intellectual and social skill. Managing and supervising skills can be learned on the job if failure is tolerated. Only limited trial and error can be accepted. The best available advice and mentoring is required for survival over the long course. The chapters of this book will provide the working manager with the knowledge necessary to accelerate learning and skill mastery. When put together in a coherent, working package through experience, that mastery rises to the professional level.

The author, Dr. Glenn Bassett, applies his unusual range of practical and professional experience to defining and clarifying the requisite skill and knowledge. From his background as a working personnel executive, professor of management, GE corporate staffer, social science researcher, consultant and business school dean he critically and synergistically sorts out the realities of sound management practice. He deals with issues of authority and discipline rationally and realistically, disposing summarily of nearly all standard motivational theory. He challenges commonly offered “principles” of management showing that many are misleading or illusory. He lays out the principles of worker productivity that a manager must grasp to control cost and quality. What emerges is a description of the Manager’s Craft that summarizes the knowledge and skill required of the working manager who must exercise control in the workplace, build commitment among colleagues, and sustain high quality, cost-effective productivity. This is an intellectually rigorous analysis applied to achievement of practical managerial results. This is The Manager’s Craft.

Clair, a small-town girl attending Iowa State University in 1940, has her palm read for a laugh—and gets a surprisingly specific prediction about her career, marriage, and children. She laughs it off, with no idea of how accurate it will turn out to be. After a failed romance, she hastily marries a man named John, has two children, and very soon finds herself miserable. John is not only abusive and controlling, but also a compulsive gambler. In an effort to support their family, Clair finds work in a nearby department store, and her career in fashion begins. In the sixties and seventies, Clair works her way up through the industry, chipping away at the glass ceiling of a field with far fewer women executives than the ad firms of Madison Avenue at the time. As an executive buyer for numerous retail conglomerates, she travels the globe searching for innovative fashions and meets regularly with iconic designers such as Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, and Oscar de la Renta. Among the fashion elite living the high life, there are steamy affairs, drugs, and suicides, as tragic elements mark the lives of these women in fashion whose insecurity remains hidden beneath their stoicism. This novel tells the story of Clair’s journey through the fashion world, a single mother contending with the conniving wiles of men and women and facing obstacles in the devious, behind-the-scenes political struggle of those climbing to the top.

Verne Castress retired following a forty-five-year career as a fashion executive, for which she traveled the world in search of innovative fashions for the American market. The mother of two adult children, she currently lives in Scottsdale, Arizona.

One Month Week Day Hour Minute Second narrates how Marie was victimized and lived in daily fear and despair, but discusses how she chose not to remain a victim and took power over her own life. Hoping to break the cycle of domestic abuse one victim at a time, Marie tells her emotional story to call attention to the problem of domestic violence. Her story shows there is hope for others.

Life is an aging process. Each of us will go through it in our own way. How we lead our lives when we are old, particularly as we near the end, is, I believe, worth pondering. In this way, "I've Got Some Good News and Some Bad News: You're Old" serves as a guide for all of us as we age, providing topics for contemplation and discussion with friends, family and colleagues. "You're Old" uses real patient experiences to explore what happens as we age-physically, mentally, and socially. The book also examines the tremendous abilities of medicine today as well as its limits, and the social issues that adults in America face as they age. Each chapter concludes with Notes on Living Longer, and a resource section, providing topic-specific information on organizations, websites, and other expert sources that can help the reader better understand and prepare for the prize of surviving youth and middle-age: becoming old. "You're Old" is written for the aging and the aged, their children, and younger people who aspire to grow old. It is written for the physicians, nurses and other providers who care for the elderly. The experiences explored in this book include the "good news and the bad" as the inevitable ravages of age intrude into the lives of Dr Bernstein's patients. From the most mundane situations to the truly sublime, the tales illuminate the emotional, psychological, and spiritual aspects of aging along with the diverse strategies people use to adapt to its realities.

Paul Brager is twelve when his father tells the story of Iduna and her apples. Mr. Brager always tells stories before bed to entertain Paul’s little brother, Adrian—a ritual that has become even more important since their mother died. Iduna was a goddess who grew apples that made the gods younger and stronger, but one day she disappeared, along with her apples. Paul doesn’t think much of the myth; he has other things on his mind. Paul and his best friend, Chad Tremblay, are excited to start the school year as seventh graders at Dorian Heights Public School. Even when they hear about the new principal, Mr. Theisen, they aren’t worried about ending up in his office. When Paul finally meets the principal, however, he finds him to be strange, mysterious, and extremely fond of apples. That’s when things start going wrong. Theisen develops an uncomfortable interest in Paul, claiming he once knew Paul’s father. It becomes apparent to Paul and Chad that Theisen is after something, maybe some kind of treasure—and it involves the Brager family. Paul believes his family must be protected and that Theisen must be stopped. Still, he can’t get the story of Iduna’s apples out of his head; there seems to be an odd connection to the tale his father told. He and Chad want to know the answers, but learning them may put their lives in danger.

My Book Discovered...by my Students

Almost a year has passed since I self-published my children's fantasy novel.

When I finally had the hard copy in my hands,Idecided to give it to immediate members of my family and told them not to tell anyone else about it.

My intention was to establish myself with social media first: set up a website, for example. I wanted to see the true power of social media; to see if others I knew would recognize my book without being told by my family.

One advantage I have is being a teacher in a middle school where students are using social media not only at school but also inside and outside of their homes. I figured that one day, one student would stumble upon my creation. And students do not shut up about these things, as if they have just unveiled a crude secret about their teacher and want to be the first to clue in their friends.

So, with much interest, did I discover how my grade 8 students learned.

This past week, one of my more difficult students passed me in the hall and spluttered, "Hey Mr. Coates, I saw you on Google Images."

This, in itself, is not surprising. This boy does not care about me. Obviously, he wanted to "dig up some dirt" on someone. My name was probably one of the many he looked up and he happened to find the picture that is on the book's back cover.

"Yes," I grinned, "but do you know why it's there?"
This was probably the cleverest thing I could have said: I wanted to create some mystery, some suspense.

He, or perhaps others, pursued their investigation. Maybe because they were curious to see what crime I had committed, or what had made me famous. Perhaps they were wondering if I had been on Dancing  With the Stars.

It does not matter. The fact is their hard work led to their finding that I had written a children'sbook.

One student said, "You actually wrote a book?" in that dumbfounded way that students often sound when they don't believe their teachers have lives outside of school.

Uh, the power of the Internet.

Randy Coates graduated from the University of Waterloo with a bachelor of arts degree and went on to acquire his teacher’s certificate at the University of Western Ontario. He is currently an elementary teacher in the Toronto District Board of Education.

Transformational Dentristry

Modern dentistry is not what it used to be, and that is extremely fortunate. In today's competitive fast-paced world, first impressions are more important than ever. We instantly judge people by their appearance and the first thing we notice is their smile. Studies show we tend to believe attractive people with beautiful, healthy smiles are more intelligent, competent, trustworthy, and enjoyable to be around. On the other hand, we form immediate negative opinions if a person's smile is unattractive with misaligned, yellowed, or even chipped or missing teeth. Fair or not, this is reality.

Fortunately, today's leading-edge cosmetic dentistry can transform nearly anyone's teeth into a gorgeous, engaging smile more easily and in more ways than ever before!

It is truly miraculous.

That is not the only significant change. Most people avoid going to the dentist for one primary reason: fear. Specifically, fear of anticipated pain. Yet modern dentistry is practically painless, with all types of new technologies, including lasers instead of scalpels, the Wand- a pencil-like device (rather than traditional syringe) that applies anesthetic so a patient doesn't even feel it, conscious sedation, and even ultrasonic cleaners employing sound waves to clean teeth, instead of scraping.

But most importantly, modern dentistry goes far beyond simply correcting problems such as cavities. Today, we can give you back the beautiful smile of your youth, or a much more exquisite smile than nature ever bestowed upon you.

Leading edge technologies such as Lumineers porcelain veneers, Invisalign metal-free braces, implants, bonding, Snap-On Smiles, gum lifts, and power whitening have advanced cosmetic dentistry to an art form. The results are remarkable and reach far beyond a person's attractiveness. People who have been shy, quickly gain confidence and self-esteem. Many start eating better, exercising at the gym regularly, dressing more stylishly, paying more attention to makeup and hairstyles. Plus, people respond to them better. Top cosmetic dentist report patients often getting long-sought after promotions at work, greater results with clients, and vastly improved romantic lives.

A radiant, dazzling smile is truly a life changer.

Zack Zaibak, MS, DDS, is a licensed general dentist in the state of Illinois and one of the top practitioners of advanced cosmetic dentistry in that state. Honored by the Consumer Research Council of America as one of America’s Top Dentists, Zaibak has the latest advanced training and certification in Lumineers, Invisalign, and laser surgery.

It’s 1997 at a mountaintop observatory in Southern California where spacecraft navigator Harris Mitchel and astronomer Diana Muse-Jones discover a dangerous asteroid which may hit the earth within two decades. As the asteroid tumbles through space towards an uncertain impact, Harris and Diana fight bitterly over how to announce their discovery. When Harris goes public to a skeptical world—at the cost of his and Diana’s careers—he sends their already turbulent relationship into a blaze of conflicting passions. As his notoriety builds, a fanatical preacher and his unhinged followers stalk him while an obnoxious radio personality provides disruptive help. Harris becomes an unwilling Pied Piper for his own overzealous followers hungry for belief and eager for guidance into an uncertain and tumultuous future. In this science fiction drama the characters battle each other in contests of Damn your world view! against a background of hard science, religion, romance, metaphysical speculation, and the forces of nature versus human passions and dreams. Meanwhile an asteroid hurtles through the solar system and global salvation or disaster hangs in the balance. “A courageous and visionary work … an instant classic.” —BlueInk Reviews

About Some Things Asteroidal

The Darkest Side of Saturn is, among other things, an asteroid story—an astronomer and an engineer co-discover a two mile wide asteroid that might or might not hit the Earth in 16 years. Their conundrum (besides the potentially illicit affair between them that the asteroid exacerbates)  is how to announce it without making jackasses of themselves.

Since the story is about a fictional dangerous asteroid, and since we know that real asteroids present the Earth with problems now and then, I’ll say a little about them here. If you want to either put your mind at ease or scare the b’Jesus out of yourself—depending on how paranoid you are—read on.

Do we need to worry about an asteroid collision?
In a word—NO.  It’s not something you need to lose sleep over. If you allow a few more words, it’s a very low probability but very high consequence event. It’s like that old fighter pilot’s saying about flying: “99% boredom, 1% stark terror,” except for large asteroids it’s more like 99.999... (and a lot more digits) boredom, and a teeny tiny little bit of really stark terror.

If a two mile wide asteroid like the one in the book hit, the explosion would be like detonating the whole world’s nuclear arsenal, except nearly a hundred times larger. It would likely induce “asteroid winter”, causing crop failures and 100 times more deaths than from the direct blast alone. Hundreds of millions—maybe even billions of people—including you and everyone you know—could die of starvation and wars because of the collapse of civilization.

So, it’s not likely to happen, particularly in the short term, but over the long term the odds go up. If we wait long enough, we will be hit, the question is whether it’s in tens of years, or thousands, or millions, or longer. For the big ones, it’s millions, like the six mile wide asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. But then, that was 65 million years ago. Are we overdue? To paraphrase Ray Bradbury, “Does something wicked this way come?”

Regardless, if we find one with our name on it in the short term, small or large, we better do something about it. That brings up the next question:

If an asteroid impact is predicted, what could we do and how much time would we need?
We’d need lots of lead time. It takes a few years to build and launch a spacecraft and a few more years to get there and do something. For some asteroids, like Bennu (500m wide), we already know the risk more than 150 years out. It’s about a 1:1000 probability of impact in the last part of the 22nd century. We won’t have to worry about it, but the children of our great-great-great grandchildren might.

Others might pop up with less warning. If it were a really big one, say over a kilometer diameter, we’d probably need at least 15–20 years to do something about it—even earlier would be better. We’d want to deflect it. We’d want to send a spacecraft out, or maybe even a fleet of spacecraft to nudge it a little bit. Not much, just a few millimeters per second. That’s enough, over a decade or more, to cause it to miss.

One way to nudge it is the old tried and true method of the movies— nuke it! But nuke it very carefully! Some asteroids turn out to be rubble piles of rocks barely held together by weak gravity. If you’re not careful, you could turn what would have been a rifle shot into a shotgun blast and be worse off than before. Nuke it, but a little distance away so that it vaporizes some of the surface rather than blasting it apart, and the reaction drives it in the opposite direction.

If it’s smaller, say around 100 meters wide like the Tunguska asteroid of 1908 that leveled most of a thousand square miles of Siberian forest, we might do with a little less warning time to mount a mission with nuclear devices, or we could do other things if we had more time, like hit it with a massive spacecraft going as fast as we could make it go. That would be like the Deep Impact spacecraft that we deliberately drove into Comet Tempel 1 in 2005. You might need to hit it with more than one to get it moving enough.

If it were still smaller—like the 20 meter asteroid that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia last year (generating an explosion 25 times the Hiroshima atomic bomb)—and we had plenty of time, there are other methods like zapping it with lasers from a fleet of spacecraft to vaporize surface material and depend on the reaction to nudge it. Or we could even hover a spacecraft nearby and use the mutual gravitational attraction to pull it, like a gravity tractor but a very weak one.

If you want more information about asteroids, I suggest Googling names like “Asteroid impact” or “Asteroid deflection,” or going to Wikipedia for the same topics. There’s also the NASA Near Earth Object Program web site at neo.jpl.nasa.gov that has great detail on potentially hazardous asteroids, but maybe too technical for some.

One last thought:

Why should I read The Darkest Side of Saturn: Odyssey of a Reluctant Prophet of Doom?
Why wouldn’t you if you want to know the fate of the universe, the meaning of life, and the answers to other religious, philosophical, and metaphysical questions, all of them asked and answered in an alternate universe? That’s not even to mention the illicit romance between Harris and Diana, the co-discoverers of asteroid Babylym, and the ballet thrown in for added entertainment. You know, all those things like asteroids, religion, sex, metaphysics and dancing that just naturally go together.

The Last Places on Earth by Gary Mancuso Book Feature

TLPoE CoverTitle: The Last Places on Earth
Author: Gary Mancuso
Publisher: Great Lands Publishing
Pages: 375
Genre: Travelogue/Essays
Format: Hardcopy/Ebook

Gary Mancuso has seen how fast the world’s biological and cultural diversity is being obliterated by rapid globalization. In 2005, He saw the earth reaching a major turning point, when the last remnants of primal humanity and nature would soon be gone. So, in a life-changing gamble, he set off on a six-year journey to see the earth’s remaining wildernesses. This intensely personal account of Gary’s journey includes feasting with New Guinea’s former cannibals, hunting with Pygmies in the Congo Basin, and attending a Madagascan highland death ritual with an exhumed corpse as the guest of honor. Gary paid a price for his journey: lost his wife to divorce, half his net worth to financial malfeasance, and a dear friend to suicide. He fell sick several times, got electrocuted, and struggled with the inevitable disorientation borne of long rootlessness. But he overcame each hurdle and even found romance in some unlikely places. By dumb luck, some smart luck, and an instinct for improvisation, he pressed on and somehow staggered home. The Last Places on Earth: Journeys in Our Disappearing World is a timely and powerful reminder that the wonderment and mystery that we humans naively assumed would always be there is dying fast.

ABOUT TODAY

I’ve started reading Rob Lowe’s first autobiography, Stories I Only Tell My Friends. In the first chapter he talks about a time when he was unhappy with his personal life and frustrated with his career. If a young Rob Lowe can feel that way about his life and career then what about the rest of us?

Rob’s experience is a lesson for all of us, because if you can have those feelings of unhappiness and doubt after having been a successful movie star and with his good looks, then you know that having all of those things does not lead to peace and happiness.

I think this is something we all know deep down inside, but are loath to admit. We would much rather have the movie career and good looks and then decide for ourselves—okay am I happier now? Unfortunately, for most of us, we aren’t going to get that chance. We’re going to have to take our lives just as they are, sans movies and good looks, and get along as best we can.

What I draw from Rob Lowe is that these fears and doubts happen to all of us. No one is immune. I got laid off from my law firm back in 2009. I sold my house in DC and moved to Colorado without a clue as to what I was going to do for a career. As I now begin my writing career I face a blank canvas.

In truth, every day is a blank canvas. We just live under the illusion that our future is set, but we have no guarantees of anything. This unknown, this doubt that each of us faces in life, is a universal teacher. It is harsh and unrelenting. None of us will be able to hide our eyes from the truth forever. Eventually, our illusion of control will be stripped away, and we will be forced to face the truth.

There is a method to this madness. There is a lesson to be learned. There are two ways we can enjoy peace in this life, faith or the lilies of the field. Faith is simple to understand, but hard to do, and that is to simply have faith that God will always deliver you. The lilies of the field is similar but with a slight twist and that makes all the difference.

The lesson of the lilies of the field can be found in the Gospels.

“Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
. . .
So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Matthew 6:28-29; 34.

Almost every Christian knows this lesson but nearly everyone ignores it, considering it too difficult to even attempt, or believing that God would only provide for those with enough faith to walk on water. But the secret lies in the final verse, “do not worry about tomorrow”.

Most of us, like Rob Lowe, don’t like where we’re at and think that happiness and fulfillment exist somewhere in the future, but not now. We believe this even though we know that we are not guaranteed tomorrow. The only reality is what we have right now, but we persist in looking to the future for our happiness.

We only exist right now and the only time we can be happy is right now. Nothing else exists.

This is the key. Ask yourself: Is it possible for you to be happy right now?

The answer is yes.

As for your worries about tomorrow, ask yourself: Are you okay right now?

The answer here is also yes. Because if something is going wrong with you right now you’re dealing with it, not worrying about it. That’s a big difference.

Let me give you an example. Several years ago while playing racquetball one night with a buddy of mine, I dislocated my left knee and right elbow. They had to call an ambulance to come and cart me off to the emergency room where the doctors “popped” me back together again.

Now, during the time I was laying on the racquetball court, writhing in pain, waiting for the ambulance, I was faced with a decision. I knew that in the emergency room the doctors would have to “pop” me back together and that would be excruciating. Now, I was already in pain, but the question was whether or not I wanted to worry about the pain yet to come. I could sense the fear that came with that worry. It was as if I could see it, sitting on the racquetball court staring at me. I could also see how I would be turned into a babbling idiot, if I let that fear in.

I decided to hold the fear off at arms-length. I would deal with what was already on my plate, and not worry about the future, but deal with it as it came. So yes, I was in pain, but I wasn’t afraid and that made a big difference.

This is the secret to the lilies of the field, deal only with what is on your plate, and don’t worry about all the things that may be coming down the pipe.

So today, I do not know what my future holds, and like Rob Lowe in the first chapter of his book, I have no idea where my career is headed, but unlike Rob, I do my best to not worry about it. I know I am fine today, and I’ll take tomorrow on, when it gets here.

And if that doesn’t work I suggest having a pumpkin latte.
